On average, patients typically find that their dentures require a replacement every 5 to 10 years.
Once you notice that there are several chips or cracks in your dentures, or that the artificial teeth are noticeably discoloured, your dentures may need to be replaced.
Other signs which indicate that you may require a new set is if they start feeling loose, or if they fall out. If you also notice lesions and sores on your gums, and you are experiencing pain or discomfort when chewing, your dentures may no longer be a good fit to the shape of your mouth and teeth. This may be because the shape or size of your mouth changes over the years.

It goes without saying that with proper care, dentures can last longer, as compared to if your set is handled with carelessness or little care.

As with all items that are used daily, your dentures will undergo natural wear and tear with every use. The artificial teeth become discoloured due to the exposure to drinks like coffee, tea or wine–which can leave heavy stains.

Also, as we age, our bone volume decreases, and this applies to the jaw bone. How the dentures fit your teeth, therefore also changes.

It is recommended that you see your dentist once a year to check if your dentures still fit the contours of your mouth perfectly. After an assessment, your dentist would also be able to provide advice regarding your current dentures cleaning regime, and general oral habits.

It is normal for new dentures to cause some minor irritation and soreness to your gums. You are still getting used to having a foreign appliance in your mouth. This should subside in the first few weeks. However, if the condition persists or worsens, it is best to see your dentist immediately and have it checked out.

Properly maintained and fabricated dentures are safe for everyday use. If your dentures show any signs of damage or cracking, they need to be assessed, as broken dentures or loose dentures can present a choking hazard. Proper home-care of dentures is necessary to avoid microbial build-up and growth on the dentures, which can lead to ulcers and irritation of the gums.
